East Kilbride Thistle were formed on Sunday 7th April 1968. There had been a “Junior†football club in the town which had folded in 1965, after some five seasons in the Lanarkshire League, on the understanding that either Clyde, Third Lanark or Hamilton Accies would soon move to the town to establish a Senior team.
Thistle were admitted to the Central League for the season 1969-70, and played their first league match against Bellshill Athletic (a), losing 1-0 in a “C†Division match. This Thistle team that day was: MacMillan, Woods, MacIntyre, Farrell, Glen, Ferguson, Mooney, Hay, Ditchburn, Thomson, and Hendrie; Sub: Reid. However, the club did fairly well in their first season, losing to Shettleston in the semi-final of the league cup and gaining promotion to Division “Bâ€, finishing third in a hectic four-up four-down system among the fourteen teams.
The club also had their first player signed Senior with Ronnie Sheed joining Kilmarnock after only a handful of games for the club.
